Overview
Mission and Beliefs
The mission of the Hudson City Schools is to provide an educational program that maximizes the intellectual, physical, social and emotional development of each child in a safe, nurturing, and diverse environment.
The Hudson High School Special Education Department believes all students will learn and achieve their greatest potential when provided with engaging individualized activities through a continuum of services. We believe special education is a collaborative process between families, teachers, students and administration.
Inclusion:
We offer an inclusive setting for select English and math courses for students who are identified with special needs and can work within the general curriculum. Our inclusive setting is comprised of a team-taught approach with two teachers assigned to the classroom: a content area specialist and an intervention specialist.
For those students who require more support, yet are still able to work within the general curriculum at some level, we offer several resource classes. Students work with a teacher using a variety of methodologies in order to access the general curriculum at their own pace and level. These courses are taught by a highly qualified intervention specialist, sometimes with support of a content area specialist and/or an educational aide.
For those students who require more intensive support for an extended period of the day with close supervision by a teacher and/or educational aide, there are a number of specially designed resource programs to fit the students’ needs. These programs include a combination of focused academics in a resource room setting as well as development of self-help, social, emotional, behavioral, and vocational skills. Each program is specially designed to meet the needs of the students. In addition several different methodologies may be incorporated into each classroom depending on the needs of the population. Some students may be working within the general curriculum while others may be working on the extended standards in these resource rooms.
Therapies:
Speech language pathologists, occupational therapists, physical therapists, and other related services are available based on the individual needs of the students. The school psychologist works with students as well and assesses their unique needs.
